YLA Week in the LIfe of a Volunteer

The Youth Leaders in Action program is a hands on, volunteer experience. It will definitely keep you busy! Between your volunteer work, your community-based activities, time with your host family, your group activities and any additional hobbies that you may pick up, every day will offer you the chance to get involved and learn something new!

The calendar below is an example of a week in the life of a youth volunteer taking part in a Youth Leaders in Action program with a primary focus on food security and health.

Monday

Morning

Volunteer work placement: On Mondays you help out the local youth group by facilitating arts activities for the kids.

Afternoon

Community fundraising/public engagement activity: You and your group help out with a food drive in the community to collect food for people who face barriers to access to food.

Evening

Supper with your host family and language lesson with your counterpart.


Tuesday

Morning

Volunteer work placement: Every Tuesday morning you work on the community compost and urban gardening project.

Afternoon

Community Volunteering: On Tuesday afternoons you spend some time tutoring the local children and teaching them some basic English.

Evening

Your team decides to join in on a soccer game with local youth.


Wednesday

Morning

Do your laundry (perhaps by hand ☺ )! You quickly learn a new appreciation for your washer and dryer at home. You also help out your host family since you have the morning free.

Afternoon

Volunteer work placement: You help out the local youth group again facilitating sports activities for the kids.

Evening

Planning with your counterpart for your CWY team’s Educational Activity Day next week.

Week in the Life of a Volunteer


Thursday

Morning

Volunteer work placement: On Thursday mornings you work on the eco-fridge project, you work with your teammates to build fridges that require no electricity.

Afternoon

On Thursday afternoons you work with your counterpart at the local library helping a local nurse to develop an interactive and practical nutrition workshop for new parents.

Evening

Check-in with your supervisors: You meet with your project supervisors at a café to do a bi-weekly check-in.


Friday

Morning

Educational Activity Day: Your two teammates who planned the day have chosen the theme “poverty and food security”. Your invited guest, the director of the local food bank, starts off the day.

Afternoon

As part of your educational activity day, visits to several community organizations that do anti-poverty and food security work in your community have been organized.

Evening

Birthday party! The host dad of one of your teammates is celebrating his 50th!

A-week-in-the-life-Friday

Saturday

Morning

Day off: It’s your day off so your host family takes you to their farm to show you around.

Afternoon

Day at the farm with your host family.

Evening

You head back into town with your host brother to attend a film night at the local university.


Sunday

Morning

Day off: Your host sister asks if you would like to go to mosque/church so you decide to go check it out to better understand your host family’s beliefs.

Afternoon

You go for a hike with several of your teammates and your counterpart. You spot some pretty cool animals and take a refreshing dip in the stream.

Evening

Supper with your host family and language lesson with your counterpart.
