Message from the President and C.E.O. of Canada World Youth, Rita S. Karakas, on International Development Week 2015

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of Canada World Youth (CWY), I would like to emphasize the importance of international development achievements of Canadians, and acknowledge the dedication and commitment of those who improve conditions of communities around the world. A substantive amount of great initiatives have been undertaken through CWY programs, and the demands never stop growing to contribute to the creation of a more democratic, just, and equitable world. It is necessary to work together to build on the enthusiasm and dedication of young people, and to recognize the importance of their contributions to society.

Each year, over 1,000,000 hours are dedicated by CWY volunteers to development and community projects. Such involvement directly contributes to defending and promoting human rights, health, environment, sustainable economic growth, and building strong futures for children and youth.

‘’Through their activities, Canadians embody our country’s values on the international stage and play an important role in efforts being made by the international community to reduce poverty, keep people healthy and give them hope for a better future’’, highlighted Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, in his statement on International Development Week.

I join Mr. Paradis in inviting all Canadians to raise awareness on these issues in their community, and encourage their peers to take concrete actions in order to help those who are most in need. Since CWY’s beginning, if there is something that is evident through our work, it is that through our collective efforts, we always succeed to improve, in a major or subtle way, the life conditions of those who struggle to fulfill their basic needs.

Together, we can meet the challenge. I warmly thank all of our volunteers and supporters who work so hard to make this vision of a safer and healthier world a reality.
