Canada World Youth: 40 Years of Engagement and Leadership

MONTREAL, October 17, 2011 — This year, Canada World Youth (CWY) celebrates its 40th anniversary. Since 1971, the organization has enabled 34,000 Canadians aged 15 to 29 to participate in international cooperation programs in over 67 countries. From October 17 to 23, the work of these volunteers and the significant impact these experiences have had on thousands of youth around the world will be celebrated. Forty special events will be held in 40 different cities, and over 130 municipalities will officially proclaim Canada World Youth Week. This anniversary also coincides with the tenth anniversary of the United Nations’ International Year of Volunteers.

An impact study has shown that Canada World Youth’s programs represented a life-changing experience that enabled participants to gain leadership and communication skills. “Our organization’s mission is to foster young people’s ability to participate actively in the development of just, harmonious and sustainable societies. Our young volunteers go on to become agents of change and engaged citizens. The programs have a profound effect on participants’ values and attitudes by giving them the opportunity to become more open-minded, acquire a unique sense of self-confidence and enhance their leadership and communication skills.” explained Iris Almeida- Côté, President and CEO of Canada World Youth.

In pursuit of these goals, young volunteers perform almost one million hours of volunteer work each year through the various international education programs offered by Canada World Youth.

In order to commemorate its 40th anniversary, Canada World Youth is organizing 40 events in 40 cities across Canada and around the world, including Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Halifax and Whitehorse. The complete list is available at, and everyone is invited to take part!
