Work Permit and Visa Delays – Canada’s Immigration Officers on Strike

The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) union is currently taking strike action. PAFSO union members responsible for processing visa applications have been walking out of offices in Canada and overseas.

Anyone applying for a visa should anticipate delays and submit their application as far in advance as possible.

Canada World Youth is aware of the situation, and we are working with our international partner organizations to have visa applications for all exchange country volunteers submitted as quickly as possible.  Canada World Youth is also following up directly with Canadian High Commissions and Embassies to obtain direct information about the status of visa applications of exchange country volunteers.

According to PAFSO, affected Canadian offices abroad include: Manila, Beijing, Bangkok, Jakarta, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Chongqing, Astana, Delhi, Chandigarh, London, Moscow, Mexico City and Tokyo.

Delays in the processing of visas may result in later start dates for some CWY Youth Leaders in Action programs.  However, no program dates have been changed at this time.

We are monitoring the situation closely and we will do our best to provide timely updates on our website as well as to inform volunteers, host families, work placements and community stakeholders on programs in which later start dates may become necessary.
