“We are Making a Difference!” – Message from the President and CEO, Rita S. Karakas, for International Development Week 2014.

It is with great enthusiasm and pride that we celebrate International Development Week 2014 and the central theme “We are Making a Difference!”.

Our International Development Week (IDW) 2014 celebrations include a full week of youth lead and youth oriented events across Canada. These events will focus on the amazing community development initiatives led by our international partners and supported by our youth volunteers. We will also highlight several initiatives that demonstrate the dedication and strength of all community leaders everywhere who are striving to better their communities.

At Canada World Youth, we work with great passion and dedication to make sure that generations of youth leaders receive the resources, training, international experience and networking opportunities needed to help them further their own community development initiatives. Our  Youth Leadership Awards are an example of our ongoing efforts to seek out inspiring youth leaders, to promote their work and to help bring them to the forefront of conversations on the role of youth in community development. Samuel Wakangu, Outstanding Overseas CWY Alumni Award from Kenya – leading a community development project in his community, Jennifer Martin, Outstanding Canadian CWY Alumni Award – Canadian youth leading a project in Uganda and Kahlil Baker, Youth Innovation Award, Canadian youth leading a community development project in Nicaragua, are all clear examples of how youth are “Making a Difference”. Our Vancouver IDW event “Engaged in Change: Engaging youth in the development of their communities.” will further highlight some of the amazing work being led by youth leaders and youth engagement advocates in Vancouver and internationally. Youth leaders from our national CWY Student Network are leading important conversations in Canadian Universities through their IDW events.  Finally, we will close the week by celebrating together in Toronto with our Canadian partner organizations, and members of the CWY community, all the ways in which we are “Making a Difference.”

I thank would like to sincerely thank all of our youth volunteers, community partners, Canadian partner organizations and international partners for continuing to inspire and further the work we are leading in communities across Canada and around the world. I would also like to thank our Board of Directors, and staff for helping us continue to drive the change that we seek and to which we are fortunate to be able to contribute.

Participate in an IDW event in your community and learn more about how we, collectively, are making a difference.
