Ebola virus: CWY repatriates youth volunteers from West Africa
As a result of the latest statement from the World Health Organization (WHO) which declared the Ebola outbreak in West Africa to be an international public health emergency, Canada World Youth has decided to interrupt all current projects in West Africa and repatriate youth currently in those regions. Earlier this week, CWY had already taken action to ensure that, should the decision be made to repatriate youth from these countries, proper land and air transportation was available. All CWY youth volunteers currently in West Africa are scheduled to be home by August 17.
In light of the increased alert level from WHO, Canada World Youth is also taking the following measures:
- While we are maintaining status quo in all other countries where CWY projects are occurring or planned, we will monitor the situation in those countries on a daily basis and take the necessary decisions if and when needed;
- Meanwhile, we will also work on contingency plans for all countries, in order to have the proper mechanisms in place should the virus reach other regions or neighbouring countries of CWY destinations;
- For projects scheduled to depart for West African countries in the coming months, CWY is working on several scenarios, including delaying departure dates.
We will continue to monitor the World Health Organization’s assessment of the situation, as well as the Government of Canada’s travel advisories and health notices and the American Centre for Disease Control and Prevention website, and we will provide updates as decisions are taken regarding all CWY upcoming projects.
