Ebola virus: Update on CWY exchanges with an overseas phase planned in West Africa
Canada World Youth is proceeding as planned with the Canadian phases of its exchanges with Benin and Ghana. Youth from Benin are getting ready to settle in their Canadian communities while youth from Ghana are scheduled to begin arriving in Canada this weekend.
The decision to proceed with these exchanges was made cautiously, taking into consideration, among other elements, the fact that there are no suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola in Ghana or Benin and that no travel advisory has been issued for these countries.
CWY is continuously monitoring the situation and has taken necessary steps to ensure that travel of youth volunteers to Atlantic Canada and Quebec does not represent a risk for their health and safety or that of those communities.
Furthermore, for youth planning to begin their overseas phase in the next few months, CWY is working on several scenarios that will reflect a proactive response to potential or actual risks. Should health conditions in West Africa change, CWY will not hesitate to implement any necessary measures, including delaying departure dates or even suspending some or all exchanges to that region. If any changes are made to the overseas phase, CWY will advise youth volunteers on alternative programming options available to them at that time.
We will continue to monitor the World Health Organization’s assessment of the situation, as well as the Government of Canada’s travel advisories and health notices and the American Centre for Disease Control and Prevention website, and we will provide updates as decisions are taken regarding all CWY upcoming projects.
